If there is anyone with a passion for cannabis, it has to be Ben Dronkers. Ben is the founder of the world-famous Amsterdam seed bank Sensi Seeds. Ben started for Sensi Seeds by collecting and preserving cannabis seed in 1975. These were the seeds he used to cultivate his first weed. It became a challenge to store all the seeds he had in his possession under optimal conditions and to categorise them.

The emergence of Sensi Seeds

In order to gain more knowledge about the cannabis plant he started to cooperate with botanists and farmers in 1978. This cooperation taught him that the genetics of a plant was more important than the cultivation methods that were used and the soil in which the plants are grown.

In his search for weed seeds, he travelled the world for Sensi Seeds and selected the best genetics for both indica and sativa varieties. His travels took him to the tropics and South East Asia but also through the Hindu Kush and the Himalaya. While ‘en route’ he collected cannabis seeds for Sensi Seeds of many varieties.

After returning to the Netherlands, in 1984, his passion for cannabis started to give way to an interest in the cultivation thereof. With his extensive collection of seeds, he had the perfect foundation to cross varieties and to create new hybrid cannabis types.

Hybride cannabis species

In the beginning of the nineteen-eighties, Sensi Seeds belonged to the select group of Dutch weed growers who had access to new genetics that came from America in the form of new hybrids. Sensi managed to get hold of the original genetics of these hybrid types of cannabis which were, among other types, Haze and Skunk. With this new injection of genetics, it was possible to develop world-class hybrid cannabis varieties.

The Sensi Seed Club

The predecessor of Sensi Seeds was the Sensi Seed Club that was also known in the mid nineteen-eighties as the Sensi Connoisseurs’ Club. 1985 is the real year of birth of Sensi Seeds, the year in which the test and growth facilities were completed and Sensi Seeds was able to produce weed seeds of the highest quality. Between 1985 and 1990 the cultivation programmes continued, indoor under growlights, so that multiple generations could be grown from own species in one year all with different physical characteristics. From here, hybrids were developed that were better than the sum of its individual components.

The Sensi Seed Club store opened its doors in 1986 in Amsterdam and weed seeds, growing equipment and books about cannabis and the growing thereof were included in the assortment. With this store, the first all-in-one seed shop and growshop in the Netherlands was born.

Different varieties of cannabis seeds

The genetics collection of Sensi Seeds continued to grow so that new hybrids could be created over and over again. After 10 years, the range had expanded up to almost 40 types. The best hybrids, such as Northern Lights #5 x Haze and Skunk #1 were kept in their original form. Other varieties such as the Super Skunk and the Big Bud were further developed until they possessed the desired qualities. These new cannabis varieties such as the Black Domina, Fruity Juice and the world-famous Jack Herer became legendary in a short amount of time. It was during this period that Sensi Seeds won numerous awards in several competitions and cannabis cups.

Despite the legislative changes at the end of the nineteen-nineties which made the production of weed seeds very difficult, Sensi Seeds managed to develop 5 new types including Mother’s Finest (award-winner in 2002) and Ed Rosenthal Super Bud. In 2006, Sensi Seeds was able to take over the seed company The Flying Dutchmen and this company became part of the Sensi family.

Feminized cannabis seeds

Recently the feminised varieties have been added to the catalogue of the Sensi Seed Bank so that growers have access to the original genetics in a feminised form.
The development of new species continues so that Sensi Seeds guarantees world-class novelties and genetics, also in the future.
