Just like most of the good fairy tales, the beautiful story of Barney’s Farm started a long time ago in a place far away from here. It was at the beginning of the nineteen-eighties that a small group of growers started cultivating and crossing different types of cannabis, hidden high up the mountains of the vast Himalayas. It was a rough and inhospitable region where everything was covered in snow during the winter. In the past, the members of the team had travelled the entire Middle East and the Asian continent and were in the possession of carefully selected genetics from the furthest corners. They started working with the gathered genetics in the Himalayas. Partially because of the high altitude and the suitable climate they were able to grow cannabis of the highest quality. Their beautiful harvests kept the morals high during the next three years in the remote and isolated region they lived and worked, and they managed to develop some beautiful types. These varieties were newly developed cannabis Sativa and cannabis Indica types that produce plants of which the yield was significantly higher than for the original genetics.

The emergence of Barney's Farm

One of the members of this talented team was Derry. In 1992, Derry decided that he had enough of Asia and he returned to the Netherlands. His luggage contained the genetics of the types he created high up in the Himalayas and that he now wanted to introduce in Amsterdam. Derry founded the company Barney’s Farm and started to make progress from there. Upon his return in Amsterdam, Derry also took over the management of Barney’s coffee shop. It did not take long for Barney’s to build a reputation for he had included popular and special types on his menu and this attracted many customers, both local residents and tourists, to Barney’s. The worldwide customer base and the reputation of Barney’s cannabis ensured that the place was soon known to cannabis fans all over the world as one of the better coffee shops in Amsterdam.

Worldwide fame

This unique history ensured that the seeds of Barney’s also received the attention they deserved. The many visitors of the coffee shop and the souvenir shop have distributed the Barney’s Farm seeds across the world and have contributed to the well-known name it is today. Throughout the years Barney’s Farm managed to win quite some awards and prizes and some of their types immediately were a big success. The Pineapple Chunk, for example, won the Indica Cup in 2009 immediately after its introduction. The Critical Kush was a huge success from the first day the type was brought on the market. In the 30 years that Barney’s Farm exists, its popularity has only increased and Barney’s farm has become a respected name in the world of cannabis genetics.
